Regarding the proposed establishment of a fourth College of Education, in order to absorb the Hong Kong Technical Teachers' College and release the other three Colleges of Education from the need to lease and borrow premises and accommodation for the ever-growing number of students during the 1980s.

Regarding the comments given by Grantham College of Education on the proposed syllabuses of fourteen elective subjects of the new full-time courses offered at the Colleges of Education from September 1980; also contains the proposed syllabuses of eight elective subjects, including Art and Design, Chinese, Chinese History, Primary Studies, English, Economic and Public Affairs, Geography, and Health Science.

This file documents early planning of the Hong Kong Institute of Education’s 10th anniversary celebration, including committee first‑meeting records, correspondence, invitations, promotion letters, preparation of appreciation certificates, and 10th anniversary development records with an event calendar proforma.

The Refresher Course for Panel Chairpersons focused on helping the participants to better equip themselves for the duties of an English Panel Chairperson. Towards the end of the course, the participants would be arranged to visit international schools in order to see:

• how English was taught to non-native -speakers in another system; and
• how another English department was run, from a management point of view. Or, more broadly, to observe:
• issues related to “language across the curriculum”;
• resources and facilities for English language teaching.

This file includes correspondence between the English Department and international schools in Hong Kong regarding arrangements for participants to visit the schools. The visits had been part of the curriculum since the refresher course was launched in 1991.

The objectives of the image study were:
1) to assess the community’s awareness to the HKIEd;
2) to indicate the public understanding on the institute of a key provider of teacher’s education;
3) to assess the perceived image of the HKIEd and its ranking among local UGC-funded education institutes; and
4) to assess the intention of studying at the HKIEd and the tendency of recommending the others to study at the HKIEd.

The image study was conducted by Consumer Search on 9 April 1998 and was submitted to Office of Planning and Academic Implementation.

This file includes memoranda and meeting notes regarding the establishment of the Institute of Language in Education, which was overseen by the Working Party on Institute of Language in Education. College members of the Working Party on Colleges of Education were invited to comment on the proposal for the establishment of an Institute of Language in Education under the Education Department.

It also includes correspondence between the Joint College of Education Students Union and the Education Department regarding employment opportunities for college students in 1980.
