Administrative history
In 2007, the Hong Kong Institute of Education submitted an application to the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China for the conferment of university title. In 2015, the University Grants Committee furnished a review report to the Education Bureau recommending that university status be granted to the Institute.
In January 2016, the Chief Executive, with the approval of the Executive Council, endorsed the conferment of university title. Following the gazettal of The Hong Kong Institute of Education (Amendment) Ordinance 2016 on 27 May 2016, the Institute was officially retitled The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK). The retitling marked its establishment as Hong Kong’s first education‑focused university. The inaugural cohort of graduates under the new title completed their studies in 2016.
In 2018, EdUHK obtained full self‑accrediting status for all academic programme areas, thereby affirming its autonomous authority in programme quality assurance.
