Formerly known as The Hong Kong Institute of Education Foundation (The HKIEd Foundation), The Education University of Hong Kong Foundation (The EdUHK Foundation) was established on 10 December 2014 as a high-level organisation unit under the Council of the University, upon the disbandment of the Donation Committee and the Hong Kong Institute of Education Development Fund.

It solicits, procures, and accepts donations for the development of the University and the promotion and advancement of science, social sciences, humanities, educational and cultural activities. It also provides long-term strategic advice on fundraising to the Council, and monitors and reports all matters in relation to fundraising activities and initiatives. The EdUHK Foundation is managed by a Board of Stewards constituted of devote supporters from the business and professional community who wish to share their expertise, provide personal support, and guide the Foundation towards achieving its objectives and mission in enhancing the further development of higher education.

In 2007, the Hong Kong Institute of Education submitted an application to the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China for the conferment of university title. In 2015, the University Grants Committee furnished a review report to the Education Bureau recommending that university status be granted to the Institute.

In January 2016, the Chief Executive, with the approval of the Executive Council, endorsed the conferment of university title. Following the gazettal of The Hong Kong Institute of Education (Amendment) Ordinance 2016 on 27 May 2016, the Institute was officially retitled The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK). The retitling marked its establishment as Hong Kong’s first education‑focused university. The inaugural cohort of graduates under the new title completed their studies in 2016.

In 2018, EdUHK obtained full self‑accrediting status for all academic programme areas, thereby affirming its autonomous authority in programme quality assurance.

The Department of English Language Education was first known as the Department of English under the newly amalgamated Hong Kong Institute of Education in 1995. Since then, it was known as the Department of English until the academic reorganisation in academic year 2012/2013. It had also been organised into different academic entities throughout the years:

• 1994–1998: Department of English, Board of Language in Education;
• 1998–2005: Department of English, School of Languages in Education;
• 2005–2008: Department of English, Faculty of Languages, Arts & Sciences;
• 2008–2012: Department of English, Faculty of Languages;
• 2012–Present: Department of English Language Education, Faculty of Humanities.

Reporting to the Academic Development Working Group, the Committee's responsibility was to work closely with the Teacher's Certificate (TC) Task Group of the Education Department in reviewing the teacher's certificate programmes to be offered by the Hong Kong Institute of Education in the 1994/95 academic year.
