<p>From the academic year 2012/2013 onward, the Department of Early Childhood Education was placed under the newly formed Faculty of Education and Human Development. This transition coincided with the Hong Kong Institute of Education’s diversification into multidisciplinary programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, aligning with the implementation of the new 3-3-4 academic structure in September 2012. After years of strategic planning, the Institute’s three Faculties were re-aligned and renamed as the Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Education and Human Development, and Faculty of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, reflecting a modernised and comprehensive academic framework that continues to support the department’s growth and leadership in early childhood education.</p>

In 2015, the University Grants Committee furnished a review report to the Education Bureau recommending that university status be granted to the Institute.<lb/><lb/>In January 2016, the Chief Executive, with the approval of the Executive Council, endorsed the conferment of university title. Following the gazettal of *The Hong Kong Institute of Education (Amendment) Ordinance 2016* on 27 May 2016, the Institute was officially retitled The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK). The retitling marked its establishment as Hong Kong’s first education‑focused university. The inaugural cohort of graduates under the new title completed their studies in 2016.<lb/><lb/>In 2018, EdUHK obtained full self‑accrediting status for all academic programme areas, thereby affirming its autonomous authority in programme quality assurance.</p>
